MYTILENE AND ITS HISTORIC CENTER

Mytilene (Mytilini), the capital of the island of Lesvos, is outspread on seven hills and the castle at the top of the pine forest, the mansions along the waterfront and the church of Agios Therapon at the center, prevail, enchanting the visitor. Mytilini, a town with interesting ancient history is divided in the Old and the New Town. The Old Town is a densely populated region with narrow alleys and scenic houses, while the new town has beautiful quarters with elegant mansions.

Mytilene is built in the Eastern end of the island, in amphitheatric form and is the commercial port of the island, with rich historical importance since her early inhabitants, the Aeolian.
Today is a city of large commercial, tourist and cultural development. The traveler can visit the old and new market, the enormous castle, the ancient theatre, the Archaeological and Byzantine museum, the museum of Theofilos and Teriant in Varia, the marvelous churches, the traditional house of Mrs. Vlahou, the jetty with all the commercial shops, the banks, the statue of Liberty, the statue of Sappfo, the beach of GREEK TOURIST ORGANIZATION and finally admire the neoclassic residences .

The current Historic Center (Ermou Street), in the ancient years, was the channel that split the city from the island where the castle is found today. The Historic Center is populated with shops of oriental and ancient Greek architectural rhythms combining harmoniously under the shades of the Byzantine castle. Ermou street leads to the area Epano Skala, the heart of the Old Town, that was once the commercial harbour of Mytilene and the whole island for that respect.

The area of Epano Skala, where also BREAK Cafe is located for you to relax and have a rest, is gifted with numerous incredible sites that shall definitely impress you. The castle, skirmished on the top of a piney hill, the ancient theater, the ruins of an ancient settlement and the ruins of the classic wall of the town are amazing. Moreover, the Mosque (Geni Tzami), the carved on a rock square building, the ancient vivarium (Tsarsi Hamam) are also worth seeing. Additionally, the various churches, the metropolis and the church of Agios Therapon, prevail in dignity.
